It was a perfect activity for a very wet long weekend, and there was great attendance of both locals and visitors from as far afield as Tasmania. The enthusiasm of those involved was both outstanding and infectious, and I’m sure the roof nearly lifted on more than one occasion with laughter and applause. At the awards ceremony, Leslie Williams presented the Arts NSW $1,000 prize and trophy to the Best Production, entitled The Asylum.
It was my pleasure to present the trophy for best set to local group Agonists for Frogs and the $500 award and trophy to Players Theatre entry That’s not a woman – that’s a private eye for Runner-up Best Production, on behalf of Port Macquarie-Hastings Council and Holiday Coast Credit Union. And what a delight when our local journalist Vickii Byram was awarded Best Female Actor for her part as the private detective in that play. By all accounts a tremendous performance from Vickii. Well done to everyone involved.
The Players Theatre is over 50 years young, in continuous operation all that time and originally the brainchild of the late Terry Gould. An entirely voluntary organisation, Players draws people of all ages as actors, production teams and audience. If you are looking for a uniquely creative social outlet, then Players is definitely one to try. You can contact the theatre on 6584 6663 to leave a message that you are interested. The Players team is very welcoming.
After discussions with other councillors, this week I announced I will be standing for mayor in the July 29, election as, at this stage, are two other sitting councillors – Rob Turner and Sharon Griffiths. Council has made great progress in the past five years due to teamwork. In my opinion it is vitally important to the community that we continue in that manner, with a new mayor who has both council experience and commitment to cooperation.
