Many local businesses already have taken advantage of the incentives available to hire more young people. Local young people who have been dependent on welfare have now gained employment through the federal Coalition government’s innovative PaTH program. This is a big win for those young people and a win for local businesses.
I encourage business owners to take advantage of the Youth Bonus wage subsidy of up to $10,000 to assist taking on extra staff to help grow their business. The wage subsidy has seen more than 5000 young people gain employment through the PaTH program to date.
The best form of welfare is a job and the government’s significant investment in PaTH is focused on helping young people get the skills they need and getting them a job. Businesses employing young people (15-24 years of age) on income support, and registered with an employment services provider, may be eligible for a wage subsidy.
Youth Jobs PaTH also offers young Australians access to job-ready training programs through the Prepare element and internship opportunities through the Trial element. For more information visit jobactive.gov.au/path
National Rural Commissioner
I was delighted the government National Rural Commissioner legislation passed through the Parliament this week. As Assistant Health Minister, I introduced this legislation a couple of months ago and after finally making it through the Senate, we can now start the process of appointing the Commissioner.
The National Rural Health Commissioner will be an independent advocate, work with communities, the health sector, universities and across all levels of government to improve regional and rural health policies and champion the cause of rural practice among the medical and health professions.
