The group has agreed to supply warm clothing and blankets to a group of Syrian refugees experiencing their first winter in Wagga Wagga.
“Temperatures regularly drop below freezing, so practical support in the form of warm clothing is essential,” group spokesperson Krissa Wilkinson explained.
“We’d like to show that people in our local community care, and to reinforce the message that asylum seekers are welcome in Australia, despite the actions of government.”
Last year the Mid North Coast Refugee Support Group ran a successful knitting project in which items made with love by local knitters and crocheters were distributed overseas and closer to home, in Newcastle. Heart-warming photographs of displaced Syrian children wearing items made by members of the Kendall Kettles Craft Group were sent back from Germany.
“Seeing those kids grinning as they posed for photos in their cozy new clothes was just brilliant, and showed how much they appreciate simple acts of kindness,” Krissa said.
“We are hoping the compassionate people who gave last time will help out again.”
While the group welcomes any kind of support, donated coats, jackets, jumpers and other winter accessories need to be clean and presentable.
“It’s important to remember the recipients are in vulnerable situations, so we ask that you respect their dignity, and please donate only good quality items and clothes in near-new condition,” Krissa said.
Items suitable for men, women, and children of all sizes are required. Local support group members across the Port Macquarie, Wauchope and Camden Haven area have agreed to co-ordinate collections and pick ups.
Anyone interested in donating items can contact Phoebe Crane on 0400 776 776.
