Previous winners include Ryley Batt, James Magnussen and Liam Magennis and Laurieton swimmer Sarah McIntosh will shoot for three-straight award wins this year.
The multi-class swimmer has won the previous two in a row, benefiting from the financial help involved with winning the award.
“It was very good to win it the first time and again the second time,” she said.
“I was very happy with myself and it was really exciting.”
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council deputy mayor Lisa Intemann acknowledged that athletes on the Mid-North Coast had to travel extensively in order to face competitors and attend training camps.
“It’s another opportunity for the local community to come together and support our young athletes,” she said.
“It’s fabulous to have increasing numbers of applicants over the years and we hope that will continue.”
Last year 90 people applied for the sports awards which includes the Wayne Richards Sporting Scholarship.
“We are such a sport-oriented community,” Intemann said.
There is an increasing amount of generosity from local businesses and annual fundraising activities conducted by council’s Mayor’s Sporting Fund sub-committee.
“We are again able to offer up a total of $7000 across nine categories in an effort to provide ongoing support to our local athletes.”
