Wauchope Community @ 3 will also offer shower facilities and clean towels for those who need them.
It will happen every Monday from 3pm to 5pm, starting on August 7. Caleb Rose, who’s general manager of the country club, says it will be very discreet. People can come around the back of the building through the car park downstairs to the auditorium, rather than walk through the club.
“We will put in a barbecue for the community, encouraging homeless people, lonely people, people who can’t get a meal, to come along. We are going to open the locker rooms and provide towels for people to use,” he said.
“We need volunteers to help cook, people who have their own stories and can help with counselling and friendship, and donations – food for the barbecue,” he added.
I think there are lots of people doing it tough out there. People just don’t realise.
- Alan Rudd
Club president Alan Rudd said they didn’t hesitate when they heard about the initiative.
“I think there are lots of people doing it tough out there. People just don’t realise,” he said.
The Camden Community @ 3 target loneliness and homelessness there, and came along to Wauchope to help the launch.
“Homelessness and loneliness are growing concerns in every community. Most people need a hand up, not a hand-out,” said chair, Theo Hazelgrove.
One man they helped said he’d been jobless and living rough when he went to their barbecue and chatted to someone who used to be homeless and now volunteers.
“I’ve now found a job, and a place to live. When you’re on the streets, you lose your social connection with people. The barbecue is a good way to start having conversations with people and learning to care about others,” he said.
