The Hastings Cancer Trust funded Our Stories project, coordinated by Jan Dennis, gives individuals and families affected by cancer a voice.
A collection of powerfully personal local stories was presented to Port Macquarie library and will be an invaluable resource for anyone attempting to navigate the physical and emotional impacts of a cancer diagnosis.
“Everyone has found something positive about this experience,” Jan said in launching the story series. “It’s almost had a ‘seize the day’ effect. Cancer is not a happy thing but lots of positive has come out of this project.”
The stories are presented in a print format and presented digitally on the Hastings Cancer Trust website.
You can stay positive when hope and love is there.
- Glennis Squires
For participant Glennis Squires, sharing the story of her own cancer journey as she continues to fight the disease has nurtured a sense of joy about life rather than sadness.
“You can stay positive when hope and love is there,” Glennis said. “I’ve always had a positive attitude toward my cancer journey – there is no sadness there. Our family laughs a lot.
“The main thing is for cancer sufferers to never give up – always have hope. Always look for someone to talk to.”
Marg Foran has embraced her battle with cancer as an opportunity to reconnect with life.
“You’ve got to make every day special. Read these stories and share your memories. Be useful and give back,” she said.
“I can tell you that love is a drug. I want to live well.”
Karen Hinton of the Hastings Cancer Trust said the Our Stories project breaks down the isolation that can come with a diagnosis and ensures families do not feel alone on their journey.
The next major fundraiser for the Hastings Cancer Trust will be a very special performance by Marina Prior at the Glasshouse on August 1.
