Motorbike riders on the Mid North Coast converged to raise funds for breast cancer charities by way of the Pink Ribbon Ride.
Organiser Leonie Turner said this year was set to be bigger than ever, and it certainly was.
“It’s absolutely amazing. I’m blown away,” she said.
“I was in tears this morning when it looked like it may be called off because of the weather but I’m thrilled it’s gone ahead.
“This is my third year doing the ride and given I know several people affected by cancer I was happy to say yes to organising this great event.”
She said the biking community on the Mid North Coast is huge and band together for events such as the Pink Ribbon Ride.
“It means a lot to me to see so many people. It’s been a big lead up,” an emotional Leonie said.
The riders departed towards Wauchope, went down Bago Road, stopped at Kew and then on to Bonny Hills.
Leonie Snowdon is a cancer survivor. She was diagnosed through a routine mammogram and said she was passionate about people ensuring they are checked for breast cancer.
“I’ve ridden bikes for years and was involved in the ride even before I developed cancer,” she said.
“It’s really heart warming (to see so much support). There are a lot of people who are touched by cancer of all sorts.
“It is really lovely to see so many people, to see them go to such effort and to wear their pink colours with such style.”
Breast cancer is still the most common cancer for women, with one in eight women diagnosed before the age of 85.
Although outcomes after diagnosis are continually improving, with 89 percent of women diagnosed after living well five years after diagnoses, and with early detection the statistics are even better for women diagnosed, cancer is something that touches almost everyone and any money raised will go to helping those who need it most.
