Police are hunting a man who drove into another car outside Wauchope library and sped away.  The library is closed until Monday.

Warwick Maltman from Wauchope was sitting in his car parked outside the library on Thursday morning, November 9, when a man came out of the building. The man got into his car, and crashed it into the Maltmans’ car, losing his bumper in the process.

Apparently the man had caused a disturbance inside the library before storming out and getting into his car.  He then drove off – without his bumper – along the Oxley Highway towards Timbertown.

“It was quite frightening.  Someone phoned the police and the highway patrol were on the scene quite quickly and went after him,” said Mr Maltman.

Police are searching for the driver who was last seen driving at speed through roadworks on the Oxley Highway.  Staff in the library were also shaken up by the incident, and police are now at the building carrying out investigations.

The incident, involving a member of the community and library staff, is currently under investigation by the NSW police and Wauchope Library will be closed until Monday November 13.

“We are very thankful that no-one was injured in this incident. Whilst we understand the closure of the library will be an inconvenience, safety of staff and our community is paramount,” said Council Director Jeffery Sharp.

“We thank the community for their understanding and encourage them to access our library facilities in Laurieton and Port Macquarie in the interim, if possible.”
