Police said the incident happened just after midnight today when residents of a Cameron St home were disturbed by their dogs barking at the back screen door.
A 41-year-old woman allegedly saw a man on the back deck of the house carrying a backpack.The man allegedly smashed the glass sliding door with a hammer and unlocked the door.
The man then allegedly hit the 44-year-old male occupant of the house to the head with a hammer several times and demanded cash from the woman in the house.
The man was taken to Port Macquarie Hospital by ambulance but was later flown to John Hunter Hospital to be treated for severe head injuries.
A police investigation was launched and their inquiries led them to a house in Hollis St, Wauchope where a 35-year-old man was arrested.
Police said he was assisting them this morning.
