In 2012, council and Charles Sturt University entered into an historic agreement to collaborate on the relocation and construction of a new commercial environmental laboratory that would also provide for a strong teaching and research focus.
Last week it was an honour to be joined by Professor Heather Cavanagh from CSU as we officially opened the newly constructed, larger laboratory facilities that have resulted from this partnership. The laboratory at the new Port Macquarie CSU Campus, provides a state-of-the-art facility for council to conduct all-important water quality analysis, ensuring the supply of drinking water complies with legislated standards.
The prospect of offering commercial research services for soil testing, food safety and hygiene analysis will also provide future economic opportunities, and promote even higher standards of scientific research and analysis. This is an exciting partnership, with real long-term community benefit, and a big congratulations must go to all those who have made it happen.
Ironman 2017
One of the highlights on our local sporting calendar is Ironman Australia, which hits our streets this weekend. It’s about fun, fitness and community spirit, and from Port Macquarie all the way to Dunbogan, our community turns out in force to support this major sporting spectacle. Whether it’s lining the streets to cheer on competitors or offering time and energy to volunteer in a variety of roles, our community young and old play their part in creating a vibrant Ironman atmosphere.
This year, the introduction of the Bright Night Run on Friday evening, will add a colourful and fun-filled new element, and with Ironkids on Saturday and the main event on Sunday it’s sure to be a great weekend. Good luck to everyone involved. For information on all that’s happening visit pmhc.nsw.gov.au/ironman.
