These are organised by Operation Christmas Child, a worldwide project of the Samaritan’s Purse Organisation which hand-delivers the boxes to children, many of whom have never received a Christmas gift in their lives.
These children have been caught up in war, famine, natural disasters and poverty, in Asia and the South Pacific.
Wauchope Preschool Kindergarten have been involved in the project for the past three years, filling 140 boxes during that time.
Director Sonia Muras said the children’s families have been extremely supportive of this project over the years.
“Being a not-for-profit community-based organisation ourselves, we are always looking for projects where we can give back to those in other areas of the community in need,” she said.
“This project aligns beautifully with our service philosophy of teaching our children how to look after our world and the people within it, and is a wonderful tangible way of initiating conversations with the children about how we can contribute to making a difference in the lives of others.”
This year the children are again involved in Operation Christmas Child and over the next month will again experience the joy of giving to others.
They will shop with their families to buy items that fit each of the six categories:
- something to love
- something for school
- something for personal hygiene
- something to wear
- something to play with and
- something special
Some will make items to cover these categories and some will use their own pocket money to help fill the box.
The Wauchope Preschool Kindergarten boxes will be transported to the Operation Christmas Child Sydney Warehouse along with more than 2500 other boxes from this region.
It is anticipated that more than 120,000 boxes will be put into shipping containers in the Sydney warehouse and will be delivered to needy children by Christmas time this year.
Last year, 11 million children worldwide received a gift-filled box for Christmas and since 1993 an incredible 145 million children have received these boxes.
