Port Macquarie Surf Life Saving Club will be among those hosting a number of activities including lifesaving demonstrations and clubhouse tours.
Patrol starts from 9am Sunday and members of the club will be on hand all day until late afternoon.
“We will host a guided tour of the club, will run through what is involved as an active member and getting your bronze medallion so the community can see what is involved with being a life saver,” said club president Bill Amy.
Lifesavers have been back on patrol for almost a month, and rising spring temperatures have seen thousands flock to the beach meaning a busy start to the season for our valued volunteers.
The majority of the state’s Nippers will also be back in the water from this weekend and it’s a perfect opportunity for the public to come and see what goes on behind the scenes at their local surf club.
Over 74,000 people registered with a Surf Life Saving Club during the 2016/17 season, but there’s always room for more.
Surf Life Saving NSW Chief Executive Officer Steven Pearce believes Open Day is a wonderful opportunity for the general public to see what happens beyond the flags.
“As an organisation we currently boast more than 72,000 members but we’re always delighted to welcome new recruits into the Surf Life Saving family,” he said.
“With spring now upon us there has never been a better time to join a surf club.”
Volunteers aren’t restricted to patrolling duties and there are opportunities to further your interest in roles as diverse as learning how to work with radio communications, performing administration duties, helping with fundraising or managing a team at surf carnival.
The possibilities are endless with the only barrier being the scope of your imagination.
Mr Pearce believes it is the culture around the movement that keeps volunteers coming back each summer.
“There are so many benefits to joining a surf club. Apart from learning vital lifesaving skills, you can get involved with support services such as powered water craft patrols, get fit and healthy participating in surf sports and involve your kids in a fun range of nipper activities that will help their growth and development,” he said.
“One of the great things about joining a surf club is that you walk into a ready-made group of friends. It’s also a great way to spend some family time together, while doing something good for the community.”
