Lecturers Jacky Beckhurst and Jenny Fahey demonstrated how to make beautifully-patterned cushion covers, using black cloth, white paint and ferns.
“The purpose of workshops like this is to welcome people into Wauchope TAFE and help them find out about the courses that are on offer,” said Jacky who teaches design.
“It’s a chance for people to come in and relax and spend a bit of time, and find out what they might want to study. People are often surprised at the number of courses on offer in Wauchope, and that they don’t have to travel to Port Macquarie,” she said.
Her colleague, Jenny Fahey teaches applied fashion, design and technology.
“Some students have gone on to open their own businesses, or worked in creative industries, or gone on to further study,” said Jenny.
“For some of them, TAFE is a second chance education, getting their confidence back and getting their writing skills up. We are so conveniently located to the school, for young mothers. We have got a really good, well-equipped workshop,” she added.
It’s good to get out and do something a bit different. Wauchope TAFE is a great campus to study at.
- TAFE student Renee Cotter
Taking part in the workshop, Renee Cotter said it was a wonderful idea.
“It’s great for the community. It’s good to get out and do something a bit different. Wauchope TAFE is a great campus to study at. I did a design course last year – Jacky is wonderful and it was great to get a taste of all the things she does,” said Renee, who plans to keep studying this year at the TAFE.
TAFE NSW says many people choose it over other providers because students graduate with practical skills and relevant work experience, which means they are job-ready.
In New South Wales, TAFE has 25,000 employer connections. Students can study online, at a campus, or in the workplace; some qualify faster with credit for previous study, and work experience.
Careers advisors and counsellors are available to help people find the right course, and discuss the range of scholarships and fee help available.
You don’t have to travel to a campus to find out what’s on offer in 2018. Potential students can watch live Facebook videos on the TAFE NSW Facebook page, or explore what’s on offer by visiting www.tafensw.edu.au
