Their shared passion of woodwork was recently captured in a photo by Jack and the image went on to win a state wide competition. 

The 2017 Photo Competition was delivered under the NSW Ageing Strategy, and was supported by the Australian Centre for Photography.

Jack’s photo of his Poppie took out the school’s category. 

The win came as a surprise to Jack who wasn’t going to take time off school to attend the ceremony. 

“I got a phone call to tell me that I had actually won and should be there,” he said. 

Jack lives in Sydney and attends St. Pius X College in Chatswood. 

“Every time our family heads up the coast to visit I try to spend as much time in the workshop with Poppie as I can,” he said. 

“I love it how our relationship has been built up with a shared passion of woodworking and the transferring knowledge that he has learnt and refined since night school in the early 1960s.” 

Jack said you don't find many people in this world who are as accepting as your grandparents.

Photos were judged on how they embrace and include NSW Grandparents Day celebration themes; and for the photo buffs, originality, composition, overall impact, technical excellence and artistic merit.

Clem is 83-years-old and is an active member of the Laurieton Mens Shed. 

He said he enjoys the mateship of the group and being able to now mentor his grandson with the knowledge has on woodturning. 

The photo of Clem was taken by Jack using the same model of camera which Clem used to take portraits of his family when he was younger. 

“When I got out the camera, Poppie said I recognise that model,” Jack said. 

“It was a nice little connector.”
