A former Australian diplomat, Fred has been a favourite on the Australian festival circuit for years, much-loved for his gentle wit, gift for story and melody, and sublime collaborations with Liz Frencham and The Spooky Men's Chorale.
He was also the subject of an outstanding ABC Australian Story feature about his work in Afghanistan and the South Pacific.
Wauchope Arts is thrilled that this esteemed songwriter, comedian, raconteur and author has chosen to return to present songs from his new album Great, and his rich back catalogue.
Fred Smith describes Great as a “rollicking musical hayride through American history, politics and pathologies” in which he revisits his fascination for things American, and his deep appreciation for their musical formats.
“I think America is the greatest show on earth, for better or worse. I’m really looking forward to coming to Wauchope. I come back every couple of years. It’s a beautiful hall and a great community. The concerts there have a great, intimate atmosphere. I’m happy to go a little out of my way,” he said.
“Fred Smith is an exceptional songwriter … the most interesting folk musician working in Australia. In tune with the times and prepared to reach beyond predictable folk formats, he is endlessly innovative and creative. He is also very funny.” Bruce Elder, Sydney Morning Herald
Fred Smith will play Wauchope Community Arts Hall in Oxley Lane opposite Bain Park at 8pm on Saturday February 10. Tickets available online at www.trybooking.com/SXBX or at the door from 7.30pm - $25; $20 for members.
