The skills shown during the game confirms the future of netball in our town is in great hands.
Sunday March 18 was the first HVNA carnival for 2018 and it saw temperatures reaching 32°. The hot day on the courts didn't stop Wauchope’s youngest players giving 100%, and having fun.
Melissa Broderick, who is the coach of the Bowerbirds, said Wauchope’s Return Set netball team, the Bowerbirds, had a flying start to the 2018 season.
“They played four games at the Netta Gala day, improving throughout the competition to finish with a big win against Port Contax,” said Melissa.
“The team had thrills and spills, but showed determination to continue working on all skills in the heat. Their competitiveness proved a winner in the end, and the coming season looks to be a good one, particularly if the girls continue to move forward like they did on the court in Port on Sunday.”
"What a day, and what a way to start the season,” said Swifts coach, Chloe Kirkman.
“Could not be prouder of my Wauchope Swifts and the improvements they’ve made since last season. We have a couple of new girls this year with Annabelle and Pamela. They have fitted nicely into our team and blend in like they’ve played for years.
“Milly Jones has improved out of sight, I was so impressed with her quick thinking and big strong passes all day.
“Ellie, Eve and Shakiylah seemed to be always at the right place at the right time with their impressive defensive skills. Milla had some great defensive moves and arms over the ball.
“Alli went well at shooting and managed to get the first goal of the game, and Emerson’s improvement in bringing the ball down the court did not go unoticed, even after hurting her ankle in the first game. Overall great day, the girls had heaps of fun and learnt some new skills. Go Swifts!” said Chloe.
Anna Lewis who was the stand-in coach for the Doves was happy to report that it was her pleasure to step in and take the little Doves to the Netta carnival.
"The girls amazed me throughout the day with their amazing skills. By the end of the day the girls started to know where to stand and where they were allowed to go for each position. Thanks for a fun day girls!" said Anna.
A big shout-out to all the officials, umpires, coaches and players on a great day. A special mention must go to the Wauchope Netball Club friends and family for their support.
