Over the last six years, the Hastings Macleay Freemasons have donated over $58,000 to the cancer institute based in Port Macquarie and Ray Posner, local Freemasons spokesperson, said they have no plans to stop helping.
“Freemasons in Wauchope, Port Macquarie, Laurieton, Kempsey and Trial Bay have been working hard over the last year to raise funds to help support the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute to continue our work supporting the families of children going through cancer,” Mr Posner said.
“It is heartwarming going out into the community to try and raise funds because the people we encounter are just so generous with their money.
“For me, and other local Freemasons, it is particularly evident among young people, who, when they realise why we are raising money or selling raffle tickets, come up and give some of their pocket money which is always great to see.”
Mr Posner said the idea of the Freemasons is to help the community and the local organisations have seen that the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute is a worthy place to donate funds to.
“I think everyone in the Freemasons can see how important helping the families of children going through cancer treatment is, and it is because of this we are giving our continued support,” he said.
“To every mason and their partners who spent countless hours printing and selling raffle tickets, and to every community member who bought a ticket, I say thank you.
“We could not have done it without you.”
Port Macquarie Base Hospital’s nursing unit manager, Jenny Baroutis said the Freemasons personified service to others.
“The Freemasons return to the cancer centre each year to ensure there is financial support for the families of children with a cancer diagnosis,” Ms Baroutis said.
“These families have a lot of their mind during what can be a very difficult and stressful time and for those facing financial hardship as well, the support the masons give is a huge relief.
“We can’t thank the Freemasons of the Hastings and Macleay Valley enough for their ongoing generosity.
“It makes a world of difference to young cancer patients and their families.”
