The Wauchope resident says her recent experiences flying out of Port Macquarie are behind her decision.

Ms Melberzs is one of a number of letter writers to the Port Macquarie News regarding inconsistencies in arrival and departure times out of the Port Macquarie Airport, particularly on the Sydney route.

She said all of her most recent flights on the route had ended in cancellations and re-routing which led to missing important events.

"I flew from Port Macquarie on three separate occasions: April 6, April 13 and May 11," she said.

"All of those flights were on the Port Macquarie to Sydney route with the second flight connecting through to Melbourne.

"The first flight was delayed by 90 minutes which meant that I missed a lift and ended up at my destination late.

"On Friday April 13, I missed my son's 25th birthday. The 5.40pm flight out of Port Macquarie was late, as was the connecting flight from Sydney."

Ms Melberzs said worse was to follow with the May 11 flight cancelled and rescheduled to 10am on the Saturday morning.

"There was also a series of delays which eventually meant I arrived in Sydney at 6pm on the Saturday night. I was supposed to be in Sydney at 7pm on Friday night.

"That was Mother's Day and my son had flown to Sydney from Melbourne so we could meet up."

Ms Melberzs says the airlines need to take more responsibility for the delays.

She also says the Port Macquarie to Sydney route seems to be the flight that is always going to be cancelled first.

"It consistently feels as though this service is the first to go, if required," she said.

"Why do they even bother with any service. They appear unable to manage a minimum service now.

"I am a regular flyer. And while I will continue to fly, I will be driving to Newcastle from now on. 

"I have to try something. I do not trust the flights from here anymore."

Ms Melberzs accepted the flight issues were not 'the end of the world' but said it was 'still frustrating'.

Luxury and Groups Travel Designer Jen Lloyd, said the Port Macquarie Airport was a 'briliant space'.

"If it was running at a more reliable rate, the usage of it would be much higher," she said.

"And that would benefit the entire community."

A Virgin Australian spokesperson said the latest figures from the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics were an improvement over the March figures.

"I’m pleased to confirm that Virgin Australia’s results for the Sydney to Port Macquarie route improved with on time arrivals increasing from 69% in March to 83.9% in April, and on time departures also increased from 70.7% in March to 82.1% in April," the spokesperson said.

"The results for on time arrivals and departures on the Port Macquarie to Sydney route also improved. 

"On time arrivals increased from 56.9% in March to 76.8% in April, and on time departures improved from 53.4% in March to 76.8% in April.

"In March, poor weather conditions across Sydney impacted on time performance for arrivals and departures in and out of Sydney."

A QantasLink spokesperson said poor weather was one of the major reasons behind the flight delays.

"Our teams work hard to safely achieve the highest on time performance possible, and we have significantly improved in April and May," the spokesperson said.

"Poor weather and air traffic control slowing flights down are the main causes of delays and cancellations for all airlines in Australia.

"When disruptions do occur, we offer a range of options to our customers and work to get them on their way as soon as possible."
