The Connecting Kids, Connecting Families initiative was designed to develop important and sustainable partnerships between families, service providers and schools, deputy principal Richard Thomas said.
“It aimed to allow them to work together to meet the needs of children and give them the best of opportunities in life to thrive, grow and succeed,” he said.
“More than 100 local families and 26 local service providers had the opportunity to build relationships, break down barriers and engage in positive conversations about the support services available for children with disabilities.
“Parents and carers from Wauchope Public and other local schools came together with NDIS staff and local service providers.
“Education staff from local schools, preschools, and the Department Of Education also participated in the afternoon activities.”
They obtained and shared information to enhance the educational support provided to students with additional needs at local schools, the deputy principal said.
The Connecting Kids, Connecting Families initiative brought immediate success for many families, helping them to understand the NDIS application process and developing their knowledge of how resources can be accessed and utilised.
“It also benefited schools and local service providers,” he added.
Organisers hope it will lead to stronger outcomes for children and families engaging in the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
The Connecting Kids, Connecting Families initiative was a collaboration between the Department of Education and the National Disability Insurance Scheme Mid North Coast local area coordinators.
