The facility is accessible to the community and the Long Flat Pre-school.

Fundraising for the financial component to upgrade the playground started about three and a half years ago. The work was carried out in conjunction with the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council.

The previous playground and soft fall did not meet Australian Safety Standard and was in need of an urgent upgrade, said pre-school director Michelle Partridge.

"With council working on a tight budget and the money raised by the pre-school and local community, we were able to create a new outdoor learning environment for all children in our community," Mrs Partridge said.

"The new area includes natural landscaping, bike track, community fruit and vegetable gardens, sandpit, musical chimes, picnic area and climbing equipment with slides catering for all ages."

"On Saturday June 9, the local community was able to celebrate the opening of the upgraded community playground."

The day started with a Welcome to Country by Billy and Kirrily Slater. The well-respected community member Merv (Old Shorty) Hollis had the honour of officially opening the new playground. 

Families were able to enjoy a sausage sizzle lunch and an afternoon of exploring the new playground, Mrs Partridge said.

"On behalf of the Long Flat Pre-school committee, we would like to thank everyone in the Long flat community that has assisted in some way, either through donations or fundraising to contribute to the upgrade of our new community playground," Mrs Partridge said.

"A special thanks goes to Howe Lindsay for the removal of the old equipment and soft fall free of charge. 

"This was a joint pre-school and council project and it achieved its objective of creating this fantastic play space."

Long flat pre-school are currently taking new enrolments for 2-5 years.
