This year’s theme is Because of Her, We Can which recognises the significant role Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have played, and continue to play in the promotion of Aboriginal rights and culture.
NAIDOC Week starts Sunday, July 8, with a jam-packed calendar of events. I really encourage everyone to immerse yourself in our rich local indigenous culture.
At 9.30am, on Monday, the Birpai Gamba (call out) in the Glasshouse forecourt will be followed by a peaceful march to the Town Green for a flag raising ceremony.
On Thursday, the NAIDOC Hastings Community Fun Day is from 10am until 3pm at Birpai LALC, Aston Street, Port Macquarie. There’ll be heaps to see and do including traditional dances, elder’s yarns and stories, and hands-on tool making workshops.

Plastic Free July
July is Plastic Free month when people all over the world take up the challenge to go completely plastic free.
The Hastings family, our local waste recycling champions are doing their bit, and I urge everyone to get on board and choose to refuse plastics during July.
Council will be giving away free jute bags at several markets across the region, and for those who have some top tips for waste avoidance go to Council’s website where weekly prize packs will be up for grabs. It’s seriously time to say hoo-roo to plastics, and hello to reusable shopping bags, drink bottles and coffee cups.
