This Saturday, July 14, at 7am, Wauchope parkrun is celebrating its second Anniversary at Rocks Ferry Reserve.
parkrun (the brand name starts with a little ‘p’) organise free, weekly, 5km timed runs around the world. The idea is that they are open to everyone, free, and are safe and easy to take part in.
The Wauchope parkrun wouldn’t have eventuated if it wasn’t for the passion and hard work of local runner and community man, John Lawrie.
He liaised with Council and managed to engage the local businesses to help start parkrun off.
Bundaleer was the main sponsor, and key donations were made by the Hastings Co Op, Wauchope RSL Club, Waterman’s Café, Wauchope Sports and Trophies, and The Good Guys.
This event has become very popular in our community and people join for a variety of reasons.

The obvious one is to get fit, but there are people walking their dogs, pushing prams, having a weekly catch up, running or walking alone (in a safe environment).
It is a constant as it is on every Saturday of the year.
Over the last 24 months, Wauchope parkrun has developed a band of dedicated participants who help run the event and are always there to support each other along with all newcomers and visitors.
Hundreds of participants have completed parkruns in Wauchope. The eldest runner was a woman in her eighties.
There have been 15 juniors who have completed well over 10 parkruns in its first year.
“We have many of our regular parkrunners edging towards 100 parkruns, and the next few months will see plenty more celebrations of those milestones,” said Mr Lawrie.
So this Saturday, the Wauchope parkrun team looks forward to seeing all those who have been part of the event over the last two years and as always, newcomers are very welcome.
Arrive 15 minutes before the start for a few short speeches and enjoy some cake afterwards.
