Trek4Kidz was started in 1997 by a small band of like-minded people from Tuross Head on the far south coast of NSW. They decided to organize an event that would not only help change the lives of seriously ill children, but would provide a social event for people who share the drive and ambition for charity work and a keen interest in exploring the great Australian countryside and meeting the many characters our country boasts.
The organisation is unique, in that 100% of funds that are raised go directly to the Starlight Children’s Foundation. Most other treks take some money from the donations to cover administration costs.
With Trek4kidz, each trekker pays an amount of money each year, which not only covers the costs of accommodation and meals for the week they are away, but also covers those few administration costs.
Trek4Kidz is an annual week-long event where a group explores different regional areas of the Australian countryside by car. Since its inception the Trek has visited more than 400 towns, 45 schools and raised over $1,600,000 for the Starlight Children’s Foundation.
These funds would enable Starlight to grant hundreds of life-changing wishes or transform the hospital experience for thousands of sick children at hospitals around Australia.
This year, St Joseph’s teacher, Miss Marion Horton (Stage 1) and Mr Glen and Mrs Jodi Blair (parents of Makayla in ES1) are participating in the Trek.
There was great excitement on Friday August 17, when some of the trek cars visited the school.

Trek4kidz will be leaving Wauchope this Sunday in a blaze of glory.
The annual fundraiser for seriously ill children and their families across NSW will depart Andrews Park at 8am on Sunday August 19, after breakfast.
Participants will travel over 2,600 kms on this year’s trek, along with 21 cars and 11 official cars.
The Great Northern Trek is heading to Tamworth, Tenterfield, Toowoomba (lay day) Moree, Dubbo and then finally finishing their journey in Goulburn on the August 25. Trek4Kidz is an annual week-long event ,travelling through regional NSW and Qld, whilst raising much needed funds for the Starlight Children’s Foundation.
Trek4kidz media officer Michelle McDonald said they look forward to the event every eyar.
“We love getting out into the community, meeting new families who share in our positivity and the trek is a great way to generate community spirit,” she said.
“As a result of the current economic climate, fundraising is becoming increasingly challenging. Sadly, the numbers of sick kids will not decline, so that’s why we are proud to support Starlight.
“We never tire of visiting the local communities and contributing to this worthwhile cause – the generosity of people is pretty amazing,” she said.
