It also recognises the traditional custodians of the land, the Birpai people, who for thousands of years before inhabited the region and the long-term impacts white settlement had on their culture.
To commemorate the history, heritage and people who have made the Hastings what it is today, a flagship bicentenary celebration will take place between 11am and 5pm on Sunday, October 28.
The event 200 Together: An Exploration Through Time, will provide an opportunity for residents to immerse themselves in stories from the past, amidst a picnic setting on Port Macquarie’s Town Green.
Local entertainers, musicians, artists, food businesses and market stallholders are now being invited to express their interest in featuring at the event, with registrations open until September 7.
Council’s group manager Lucilla Marshall said the event offers the chance for people to learn about the history of the region through an eclectic mix of cultural activities.
“From local music and food, Aboriginal cultural experiences, buskers and journeys through our history, this is an event not to be missed, and there’ll be lots for the entire family to enjoy,” Ms Marshall said.
“There are so many wonderful and interesting stories, and now’s the time to look back, learn about our history and celebrate 200 Together.”
In addition to 200 Together: An Exploration Through Time council is encouraging businesses who are interested in hosting their own bicentenary-themed event or activity to get in touch, with support on offer to assist in the promotion of approved activities.
“The next four years are a great opportunity to learn about our history, commemorate our past and experience the spirit that our community is built on,” Ms Marshall said.
“There’s lots of bicentenary events to get involved in and on our website there’s a handy calendar so you can see what’s going on.”
