There’s been no column from me recently due to serving some time as acting mayor, which is always a very satisfying experience.
On another side of life, the Mayor’s Sporting Fund is managed by a dedicated and enthusiastic group of community representatives who fundraise and allocate assistance to up-and-coming young sports competitors locally.
Each month they determine applications for support for young locals to engage in competition outside our region.
But at this time of year the focus is on the $4000 Wayne Richards Sporting Scholarship, applications or which close September 30.
The scholarship was launched in 2004 as a tribute to the late former mayor Wayne Richards, who was instrumental in forming the Mayor's Sporting Fund in 1999. He was a passionate supporter of youth and sport in the Port Macquarie-Hastings region.
In conjunction with Sunrise Rotary, the annual $4000 scholarship provides substantial financial assistance to a local resident athlete, aged 13 to 21 years, to pursue their sporting goals.
Applicants must demonstrate achievement at a state, national or international level in their chosen sport, have potential to further represent New South Wales or Australia in their chosen sport, and have potential to achieve a future sporting career.
The chosen sport must be endorsed by the relevant Australian Sports Commission and recognised by the National Sporting Organisation.
Go to council’s website to complete the online application, and contact council’s Jenny Mead for any further information needed. Good luck.
Archibald Prize exhibit
While acting mayor it was my great privilege to open the exhibition of the Archibald prize exhibition at the Glasshouse Regional Gallery in Port. The winners and finalists of the ‘Archie’ are on display until 7 October – which is a rare treat as we only get this opportunity every five years.
Love them or hate them, the Archibald portraits offer an amazing insight into people’s lives and thoughts. So I do encourage anyone interested in life and art to get along to the exhibit while it’s here.
