Fast becoming a pillar in the community “Maddy” the Mid North Coast’s Orange Sky Laundry van is still receiving community support nearly a year after it started operating.
On September 9, volunteers with Orange Sky Laundry accepted over 50 jumpers and t-shirts from Aussie 4 X 4 touring, and company co-owner Blake Mason said they just wanted to give back.
“I think we all see the Orange Sky Laundry van out and about across the Hastings and when the opportunity came up to be able to donate some jumpers we thought why not,” Ms Mason said.
“They do such great work for the homeless population right across the Mid North Coast and we figured we might be able to do a little something to help as well.”
Orange Sky Laundry Mid North Coast’s vehicle manager Carly Bullard said it was great that people were still giving generously almost a year after the van started running in the area.
“It is awesome that so many people are continuing to want to help us help our friends living rough or on the streets,” Ms Bullard said.
“Getting the jumpers this morning I know when we go to our shift today our friends will be ecstatic that people in the community still care.
“All the people who come to us have a story to tell and I am proud to think the community is still behind us.”
Ms Bullard said it is good feeling being able to help others.
“For me there is no better feeling that being able to make someone’s day just a little bit better,” she said.
“As well as washing clothes we are all about encouraging judgement free conversations and being a safe place for people to come.”
In the community also on September 9 the MAD JAZZ event at Bago Vineyards raised money for a mobile food van to work in collaboration with services like Orange Sky Laundry.
The mobile food van – the brain child of Make a Difference the organisation that funded the washing machine van – will complement the Orange Sky Laundry van and be another service to help the homeless and vulnerable.
The Make a Difference team acknowledged other organisations provide food for the disadvantaged but the mobile nature of the food van is expected to set this project apart.
