Engineers from Port Macquarie-Hastings Council inspected the bridge on Thursday morning.
They found that significant damage has occurred to one of the bridge bracing members and two hanger rods which require replacement.
The council says that due to the age and complex nature of the bridge, further investigation is required, and to ensure the safety of motorists, the bridge will remain closed to traffic until these investigations and repairs have been completed.
A time frame on when the bridge will re-open to traffic is currently unknown, and updates will be provided as information becomes available, said a spokesman.
The bridge remains open to pedestrians. However ‘road closed’ signs and barriers have been installed on either side of the bridge. People are asked to continue to exercise caution in the area.
