Friday September 28 will be a special day for the businesses and op shops to promote themselves and visitors are encouraged to come and spend the day in Wauchope.
“They can come by train, and we are hoping that our local shops will respond to the John Oxley Bicentenary celebrations and join in the celebrations,” said Jeannette Rainbow from Wauchope District Historical Society.
“It’s always lovely to see a bit of action and something different on our streets to acknowledge our volunteers, and our history,” said Robyn Flanagan from Wauchope Chamber of Commerce.

Meanwhile, tickets are on sale for the Governor’s Ball at Wauchope RSL Club on Saturday October 6. There will be a live band and guests can wear formal or historic dress. Tickets cost $75 for a two-course meal. For bookings, ring 0414 845 348 or email cathylw@yahoo.com

Organisers of events say the region’s bicentenary marks a significant milestone for the community, and commemorates 200 years since John Oxley and his team of 15 explorers traversed the mountains from the west, surveying this region for early European settlement.
It also recognises the traditional custodians of the land, the Birpai people, who for thousands of years before inhabited our region.
Starting things off on Friday is the Weekend of Oxley at Mount Seaview which is the official opening of the bicentenary.
It includes the launch of a book about John Oxley by Rob Tickle, a four-wheel drive safari to Mount Jasper and Echo Point, campfire yarns at the riverside and more. Bookings: 0424 226 258.
