The Wauchope Bicentenary Riverside Sculptural Trail has been announced by Oxley member, Melinda Pavey MP.
This project, worth $196,140, will see a 1 km interpretive walking trail, encompassing the natural, Aboriginal, European and community history of Wauchope.
It will run along the popular foreshore walk fronting the Hastings River, from Hastings Street to Rocks Ferry Reserve.
It will include:
- six stops along the 1 km walk that would have either a creative or interpretive element commemorating the 200-year Bicentenary which began with John Oxley’s first exploration of the region in 1818
- creative interpreation, sculptures or creative/sculptural seating; the pieces and signage will be designed by commissioned artists
- a Bicentenary event to unveil the sculptural trail
Announcing the project, Ms Pavey said the funding had been awarded under the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund, Round Two.
“On behalf of the Hastings community, I congratulate Port Macquarie-Hastings Council for putting this project forward,” she said.
“It is very pleasing to see that work come to fruition. Equally, I’m sure the community will also very much appreciate the lasting benefits of these projects as they are completed.”
Accompanying her along the Hastings River, Mayor Peta Pinson said it was wonderful to have funding to enhance an already beautiful area.
Wauchope Chamber of Commerce president, Gary Rainbow welcomed the announcement and said he is delighted that lots is being done to improve the look of the town and its surroundings.
