Rain spoiled any party at the Old Boys Cup meeting at Wauchope but that didn’t stop local gallopers grabbing prizemoney at the $16.4 million The Everest—The Kosciuszko meeting at Royal Randwick last Saturday.

The local cup meeting was called off after stewards inspected the track at the Beechwood Road headquarters on Friday and again early Saturday.
A section of the track near the bend was heavily inundated with rain and the track was deemed unsafe for racing.
But armchair racing enthusiasts enjoyed the spectacle and the third, fifth and 10th placings of Mid North Coast gallopers in the inaugural $1.3m The Kosciuszko for country gallopers at Royal Randwick.
Wauchope’s Dale Miller grabbed a third, beaten less than a length, with his gelding Awesome Pluck (backed from $15 to $9), it being trained by Jenny Graham at Port Macquarie.
It was a late invite into the field and did Wauchope proud.
Prizemoney of $130,000 was won by the effort on the heavy track and took the geldings earnings to over $230,000 from two wins and four placings from seven starts.
Graham’s more fancied runner, Victorem ($4.40), ridden by Port’s Ben Looker, didn’t enjoy the heavy track but finished about three lengths from winner Belflyer from Grafton.
Its prizemoney of $32,000 was handy as was the $16,000 earned by Fuel, trained by Kendall resident Wayne Wilkes who trains at Taree.
Punters should forget their runs when assessing future form as all gallopers are promising and should be followed on better tracks.
Hardy Wauchope gelding Prince Mayted, trained by Colt Prosser, finished back in the field in a 1000m sprint on the same card but grabbed $3500 prizemoney.
Wauchope Jockey Club’s popular Woop Woop Cup meeting on Boxing Day is next on the agenda and plans should be made to celebrate the day which attracts not only locals but many of the holidaying crowd.
It is always a great day to catch up with friends after Christmas day.
