After all it was first played back in the 15th century, but of course not as we know it today.
Fast forward to today and we have a game that is still traditionally the same, “hit the ball into the cup with the least number of strokes possible” played by a wide variety of men, women and juniors at many venues across the country.
Wauchope Country Club senior playing member, Ron Dixon - aged 97 years - met his opposing player, eight year old Lachlan McDonald on Tuesday October 9.
Lachlan at the very young age of 8 years is already a member of Charlestown Golf Club and Wauchope Country Club. He plays in the Jack Newton Juniors on the Move programme for Newcastle and The Hunter Valley.
On Tuesday 9th October, Lachlan was a guest of the Wauchope veteran golf club and played alongside his grandfather, Gavin Price and our veteran golfer Ron Dixon in the weekly veterans competition. Lachlan played off a men’s handicap of 33 and scored an incredible 37 pts for the round.
Not unexpected I suppose when you consider that Lachlan won the Primary Schools Sports Association 9 Hole competition earlier this year, for the second year running. He has also played his first 9 Hole Pennants competition this year representing Charlestown Golf Club, winning both his matches.
So where did this skill and love of the game come from?…… well proud parents Neil and Jo said it all started on the 5th hole at Wauchope when Lachlan, Nanna Wendy, Poppy Gavin and Uncle Gregg would go and chip and putt until the sun went down, the rest at this stage is Lachlan’s skill and determination. I’m sure we are going to see a lot more of this polite young man as he matures in life.
Good luck Lachlan, we’ll see you out there!
