AARON Ison and his Port Macquarie Makos touch football mixed open team were far from optimistic heading into the NSW Country Championship touch football titles at Wollongong on October 20 to 21.

A lack of players meant it was to be more of a fitness run leading into the NSW State Cup in December, rather than a sure thing of defending their country championship.
However, at the end of the tournament the team were hoisting the trophy after claiming a one point win in the grand final.
"It was difficult. It wasn't just about having less players, but having less experienced players," Ison explained.
"Four of the players won't even be in the state cup team. It was more or less a throw together team.
"We didn't train at all. We had no aspirations to win it (but) I thought we had a good chance of going deep into the finals."
Ison was thrilled with the performance of his team, saying it was "extra special" to win the grand final.
"It was an extremely hard and gutsy win, and took a lot of heart," he said.
"To say this is an outstanding achievement is an understatement and something that basically never happens.
"Anna Lewis played as good as she has ever played. I thought she was outstanding. Tony Thompson was another stand out."
They won 6-5, then had a 5-all draw and then lost 6-5. In the quarter finals Port Macquarie had more convincing wins to move onto the grand final.
There they faced off with Jerrabomberra Storm, winning 7-6 in a close tussle.
"Across the board it was a great individual lead up to the state cup," Ison said.
"We couldn't work on team continuity but it was a good stepping stone personally for everybody involved."
The 2018 Touch Football State Cup tournament will commence on Friday December 7, concluding on Sunday December 9 at the Regional Sporting Complex and Tuffins Lane.
