Will was chosen after taking part in the National Futsal Championships at Windsor earlier this month, from January 12 to 15.
At the championships, Will was a member of the East Coast Eagles Under 12 team. He was thrilled to receive the email the day after the championships notifying him of his national selection.
Will has only played Futsal for two seasons. He started Futsal as a means of keeping his skills and fitness up during the soccer off-season.
“I am very excited to be representing my country in a sport I love,” he said.
“I’ve never been overseas before which makes it even more exciting!”
His mother, Kelly Newell, praised everyone who has helped Will get this far.
“We are very appreciative to coaches Mick Day and Laurent Gonfond for the opportunity for Will to play at Nationals,” said Mrs Newell.
“Will had so much fun on and off the court with his team mates. To then be selected in the Australian team has made the whole experience one he will never forget.
“We would also like to acknowledge soccer coach Ben White for all of his efforts developing Will’s skills and getting him involved in Futsal in the first place.”
Will is looking forward to further honing his Futsal skills as part of the East Coast Futsal Academy this year.
