The Bago Vineyards Grape Stomp hits the magical 21st anniversary mark on Sunday, February 10.
What started out as a fun event during the Jazz in the Vineyards and to celebrate the annual grape harvest, the annual Grape Stomp has turned into an institution very much like the long running monthly music ‘Jazz in the Vineyards’ at Bago Vineyards.
Each year, visitors from all parts the mid and north coast are attracted to the event with people travelling even further such as Sydney, Newcastle, Coffs and Grafton.
Last years’ winners Brad Smith and stomp partner Oscar Guardado travelled up from Sydney, with Brad winning the event for the second time.
Brad has continued the family tradition of competing in the stomp just as his father had done in past years.
The stomp record of 7.1 litres of juice from 10 kilos of grapes set in 2012 has yet to be broken and it looks a forlorn hope this year with the long hot summer taking its toll on the grapes.
However, funnier things have happened on stomp day.
The Media Stomp will again feature the combined Port News/Express team with runner-up Prime7 still to settle on their team selection.
The long shot HitFM team of Cass & Bodge are in a strict training regime and are expected to finish with a splash. Other media competitors expected to compete this year include last year’s newcomer, 2WayFM.
This year the Stomp will assist raising funds for the Lasiandra Festival Committee with a sausage sizzle. The Port Macquarie based XS Foods will also have the food van at the vineyards.
Admission to Bago Vineyards for this Sunday only, will cost $10 for adults and $5 for children with entry to the Bago Maze included in the admission price.
The gates to Bago Vineyards will open at 10am with the music featuring BK Blue starting at 11.30am.
The Media Stomp will commence at noon with the 21st Annual Grape Stomp commencing directly after the media stomp presentation. Competitors in the annual grape stomp are requested to lodge their entry at the cellar door by noon.
