The Wauchope Gazette has been talking to people on the streets of our town to gauge what their priorities are for the upcoming state election.
Adrienne van Spanje thinks policing is an issue that needs to be addressed locally.
"There seems to be a lot of anti-social behaviour and we are a much bigger place than we used to be a few years ago.
"We could probably do with another primary school. We also need more parking. Health and education, if they get more money, the whole community will benefit.
"We need more support for teachers and for high-risk and special needs children. We need more doctors in town," she added.
Troy Terp believes business and the economy are the most important things to worry about.
"I'm concerned about jobs and keeping the economy ticking over," he said.
"Those issues are paramount to everything else flowing on from jobs, jobs, jobs. I think any introduction of new taxes is something we should avoid at all cost, especially on businesses.
"We need support for rural sectors and farming. We need pricing supports for things dairy, at least in the short term. It's all about supporting the small businesses. We need to ensure that they are employing people and making a profit."
One couple are taking their time before making their final decision.
“My husband and I have talked about it at home and we really don’t know who to vote for,” said Sue O’Brien who moved back to NSW from Queensland three months ago.
Neroli Reid wants more support for business houses in Wauchope, for farmers, and she would like to see an end to discounted milk.
Neroli says she would like to see 24 policing in Wauchope, but doesn't think a round-the-clock presence in the station is possible any more.
"Things have changed, and mobile police patrols are used now," she said.
A voter called Fred says he always gets upset when the government sells of infrastructure like poles and wires.
“The Commonwealth Bank was sold and it used to keep things in check. The list goes on: Telstra and all those sort of things should be in public hands, not private hands, roads and rail too," he said.
A voter called Bill hopes the Nationals stay in government in NSW.
“God help us if Labor wins. I’ve been around a long time and I’ve seen it all before. Labor are too left-wing for me,” said Bill.
“I didn’t even know there was an election coming up,” said a man from Pappinbarra.
A voter called Jenny was apathetic about the upcoming State election and had no strong opinions on what issues were at the fore.
“I don’t know and I don’t care. It doesn’t matter what we say,” said Jenny.
“I haven’t given it much thought. I’ve too many other things to think about. It doesn’t seem to matter who gets in. It’s a waste of time voting.
“I know that’s not the right attitude, but I know a lot of people who think there’s no point.”
