Last Thursday saw the annual St. Patrick's Day concert presented by the sisters of St. Joseph. It was an outstanding success with talented local artists helping with the presentation of first-rate entertainment.
Ald A.E. (Mac) McLaughlin was the compere for the large audience and the proceeds of the function were £118 in appreciation for all artists. Indeed the audience was unusually generous with its applause, testifying to its satisfaction with the performances.
Mrs Davoren was the capable organising secretary, adding another triumph to her list of successes for St. Agnes' Church and its convent. Mrs Rose Fitzgerald and Mrs Mary Kennedy were the accompanists.
CWA Birthday Party
A bright and happy atmosphere prevailed at the CWA rooms on Friday afternoon on the occasion of the 34th Birthday Party celebrations of the Port Macquarie Branch. Bowls of pink flowers made gay the CWA room and members and guests enhanced the scene in their bright summer frocks and pretty hats.
Understanding for the work done by the Port Macquarie branch, from the foundation members through to the present, with congratulations for their achievement, so evident in the lovely CWA rooms today, was the sentiment most expressed in the birthday messages spoken by representatives from neighbouring branches.
President Mrs Evans welcomed members and guests and in the ceremony of cutting the birthday cake invited foundation members who were present to light the candles and Mrs. V. McLaren, patroness, and life member, to cut the cake. Foundation members present were Mesdames Ross, Orr, D. McLaren, E. Keena and Matron Jobson.
Ski Club formed
At a meeting at the International Aquatic Gardens at Hibbard on Monday night, it was decided to form a ski club in Port Macquarie. Mr. Roy Hargraves, proprietor of the Ski Gardens, is trying to coordinate water skiing activities on the Hastings River. The joining fee of the club, with each nominee to be accepted through committee, will be: Boat owners £3, skiing members £1/10s per year. A percentage of this money will go towards the club. The facilities which Mr. Hargraves offers to all members include the beach, launching ramp, ski jump, swimming pool, recreation facilities, etc.
Second death adds to tragic homecoming
The death in Sydney on Tuesday morning of 16-year-old Geoffrey McClelland brought another wave of sorrow to the community and heartfelt regret that a second, brilliant, young life should cease to be so suddenly.
Geoffrey was severely injured in the same accident which took the life, on Saturday morning last, of Patrick Hetherington. There can be no telling what the future held for this exceedingly outstanding young man. He would have turned 17 in April, and had already made his presence felt in sport. He gained his Leaving Certificate at Wauchope High School last year; and he had showed great promise in part-time work as a salesman, using to advantage the persuasive and delightful personality which went with his other attributes.
