During some alterations at Wauchope Barber Shop in Cameron Street operated by Rohnda Pearse, she found an unidentified photo behind an old bench seat that had been pried from the wall and moved, for the first time in 70 odd years.
On investigation, she found it was from November 1956, during the Olympic Torch relay down the East Coast, from Cairns to Melbourne.
Rohnda kindly shared the photo with Wauchope History on Facebook. Chris Rogan from the group said that 3,800 were involved in that Olympic relay, all running one mile, and each lighting one of 400 torches used as the flame continued its journey to the Melbourne Games Stadium.
This photo was taken on the Pacific Highway nearby, as one of our local participating amateur athletes, Don Monkley received the flame, while yet another local, spectator, Anton Deegenaars is standing behind him.
"It's a great glimpse of our local history, and we thank Rohnda for sharing it with us," said Chris.
