The Activate Inclusion program is a ground-breaking initiative focused on providing sporting pathways for students aged 5 to 18 years with a physical, intellectual or sensory disability. The day also catered for students with learning and mental health difficulties.

The program was delivered with the support of Variety - the Children's Charity NSW/ACT and offers children who are often segregated from mainstream school PE due to a lack of adaption knowledge and adaptive equipment, the opportunity to experience a variety of sports in a fun and inclusive environment.

Port Macquarie-Hastings mayor, Peta Pinson, welcomed more than 180 students from across the Hastings and Mid-North Coast who participated in a round robin day of Australian Rules football, cricket, Futsal, netball, rugby league, tennis and wheelchair sports.

Sport NSW disability inclusion manager, Murray Elbourn, was delighted to collaborate with Variety - the Children's Charity NSW/ACT, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council and local community groups to host the event.

"This is our first Activate Inclusion Sports Day in Port Macquarie and we are excited to work with key partners including council, the university, community and education in this region to promote growth of disability sport," Mr Elbourn said.

Variety - the Children's Charity NSW/ACT Chief Executive Officer David Sexton said every child, no matter their level of ability should be able to enjoy the fun of playing sport.

"Every child deserves the chance to have a go at playing sport. We are proud to partner with Sport NSW and Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, so kids of all abilities have the opportunity to try different sports in a fun and inclusive environment," Mr Sexton said.

"It's wonderful the students can experience playing side by side, often for the very first time."
