Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) Manager of Maintenance Delivery in the Northern Region Vicky Sisson said the upgrade addressed one of the "biggest crash sites" on the Oxley Highway.

"There were some quite nasty curves that were causing some safety concerns," Ms Sisson said.

She described the Oxley Highway as an important thoroughfare.

"Wauchope is like a commuter suburb so there is a massive volume of traffic from Port Macquarie and Wauchope and this upgrade is really addressing some of the capacity issue and behaviours," Ms Sisson said.

Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams said the project was not only completed early but also under budget.

"Works on this section of the Oxley Highway started in June last year and included removing sharp bends by realigning the road, and building a new eastbound overtaking lane between Spencers Cutting and Rawdon Island Road," Mrs Williams said.

"The project relocated the Rawdon Island Road intersection, extended the westbound overtaking lane, widened the highway to 3.5-metre lanes and two-metre shoulders, and installed new safety barriers.

"At the end of the day the community gets a safer road, a much wider road which includes overtaking lanes, and a road that is straighter, with less bends."

Member for Oxley Melinda Pavey said the project was part of the NSW Government's $50 million package of work to improve safety and travel times along parts of the Oxley Highway.

"This project is so important to the many people who commute regularly between the Hastings Valley, Wauchope and Port Macquarie," Mrs Pavey said.
