Blues centre Brendon Johnson crashed over out wide with 30 seconds left in the match before goalkicker Sam Watts slotted the extras as the siren sounded.
The draw extended Wauchope's winless streak to four matches, but all but ended the Breakers hopes of a late surge into the top three.
"It's been a bit tough and we've been through a bit of bad form and we're trying to come out of it," Bird said.
They have now had two draws in their last four matches.
"It's not too often you get a couple of draws within a season although it's better than a loss."
It kept the Blues' five-point buffer in tact in third position with three rounds remaining which will provide them with an all-important double chance in the finals.
"I think (the Breakers) probably did deserve to win after our completion rate in the early stages of the game, but I feel like we did pretty well to get the draw in the end," Bird said.
Johnson came into the Wauchope side following the withdrawal of regular captain Beau White late in the week as he welcomed a new addition to the family over the weekend.
"It was Brendon's second game this year for us," Bird said.
"Beau and his partner had their baby on Friday so he was out along with three others as well so we did pretty well to get to where we got."
While disappointed not to get the victory, it could be a turning point in their season heading into the finals.
"That's what Anthony was saying," Bird said.
"We more or less needed a win to cement the top three, but the draw gets us there as well so hopefully we can keep getting better these next few games and go into the semis firing."
Halfback Tristan Scott was a constant threat in attack.
"He had a hand in most of our tries," Bird said.
"Most of them did come off the back of something he did, whether it was the play before we scored or earlier in the set.
"Generally he did really good to get us on the front foot and into an attacking position."
