A Toyota Land Cruiser heading east collided with a west-bound vehicle at 11.35am on Tuesday July 16.
The impact caused extensive damage to the vehicles involved. One driver, a woman, was taken to hospital due to her injuries and her condition is described as critical.
Inquiries into the incident are being carried out by Newcastle crash investigators.
