On the beaches at present, bream have been quite consistent with both Lighthouse and North beaches producing a steady stream of well-conditioned fish. Worms, pipis and strip baits have all proven successful.

Tailor numbers remain somewhat disappointing with a few small choppers here and there, the odd good greenback after dark, and few consistent results in between.

Mulloway are in the same bracket, with winter to date proving largely disappointing from the sand. While the odd fish is being encountered the bulk of their numbers appear to be within our estuary systems. Plenty of salmon in the meantime to keep you amused.

In the estuary, blackfish have picked up again after a quiet period around the full moon. Both the run-in and run-out tides have proven productive in different sections of the breakwalls, with fish to about and over a kilogram on offer.

Flathead numbers remain consistent with Blackmans Point and the flats around Pelican Island well worth a go on either whitebait or lures.

Those throwing lures further upstream have also been encountering some great school mulloway action, along with the occasional fish well in excess of school size. For consistent action on these larger models, the breakwalls remain the place to be using either live baits or large lures.

On the bream front, this coming dark should again be excellent, with Limeburners and areas further upstream now at their prime. Gut baits have been particularly successful as often is the case at this time of year, however mullet strips and yabbies have also worked well.

Of the rocks, drummer numbers have been reasonable given the continued warm water temperatures and presence of sand in many locations. Locally Rockies is worth prospecting, as is Diamond Head to the south.

On the tailor front, some reasonable reports continue to filter in from Crescent Head and areas further north, with a few nice fish on offer. On the bream scene, the recent full moon saw results down a little as is to be expected, however look for an improvement from this week onwards.

Plenty of blackfish still around for those keen to toss a bit of cabbage, with Shelleys giving up a few nice bronzies early in the week. With the seas calm, prospecting for groper could also prove rewarding.

Offshore, some terrific reef fishing is on offer as is often the case at this time of year. Both of our local charter operations have been scoring plenty of snapper, pigfish and pearl perch, along with a few mulloway and teraglin.

Best results have been achieved in the reefs in under 50 metres of water, with the leatherjackets still thick and ravenous if you head much wider.
