The six metre-long Welcome Scroll, which bears 113 mayoral signatures with more to come, is a conversation starter.
Mayor Peta Pinson's signature and the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council logo will be added to the Welcome Scroll before it visits Refugee Welcome Zone communities in Western Australia.
Cr Pinson said joining the Welcome Scroll Project spoke to our community and said we were inclusive and we welcomed people of different nationalities who came to us for different reasons and experienced different things in the world.
Cr Peter Alley said it was very important we were a welcoming community, and in particular, welcoming to refugees.
The Port Macquarie-Hastings is a Refugee Welcome Zone.
The Refugee Welcome Zone declaration is a public commitment in spirit to welcome refugees to our community, uphold the human rights of refugees, demonstrate compassion for refugees and enhance cultural and religious diversity.
The Welcome Scroll is on a national journey to visit Refugee Welcome Zone council areas.
Welcome Scroll Project coordinator Jan Govett said the project, which was about positivity, brought people together.
"Refugee Welcome Zone councils use the scroll's visit as an opportunity to discuss refugees in the context of their own community and to expand on why they chose to become a Refugee Welcome Zone," she said.
People loved looking at the scroll, Ms Govett said, to see what areas were included.
"It's like kids around a honey pot," she said.
The Welcome Scroll is a joint project of the Refugee Council of Australia, Refugee Welcome Zone Councils and Rural Australians for Refugees.
There are 161 Refugee Welcome Zone councils across the country.
