A bunch of big-hearted volunteers meet each week in the Anglican hall behind St Matthew's Church in Cameron Street, and serve up tasty soup and a bread roll to people who want some company, or appreciate a free hot meal.
The Uniting Church in Hastings Street have had a free lunch program every Friday for some years, and the Anglicans thought it would be good to have something twice a week. The former minister, Reverend Judy Taylor talked to the former Uniting minister, David Woodhouse, and offered to do a free lunch every Tuesday.
"We get people coming to both," said volunteer, Kelly Steele.
"It's lovely for people who have lost their partners, want some company, are doing it tough, or who are down and out. We have a regulars who like the company. We also do a special dinner at Christmas time which is popular."
They serve different varieties of soup every week, and normally one of the ladies makes a pudding. For the fifth anniversary they had a cake, and the guests thoroughly enjoyed it.
The lunch attracts up to 20 people every week, from steady regulars to visitors who are directed there by the Vinnies.
