When the heavens opened, Wauchope were in trouble at 3-33 chasing 110 for victory but it was their fielding effort that best impressed the skipper.
He was also proud of the way young guns Riley Mallyon and Will Clarke handled the Premier League.
"The young guys bowled well when we needed them to and our outfielding was really good," Miller said.
"We took a couple of really good, high catches which helped us and you expect them to be taken in this grade, but they don't always come off especially on an overcast, windy day."
They take on Port City Leagues at Oxley Oval on Saturday after the Magpies dismissed Port Macquarie Pirates for 101 last week with Brendan Badenoch claiming three wickets.
But Miller knows his side has to focus on more than just the one player in the Port City lineup.
"Badenoch is always a big threat, but we don't want to concentrate on any one player because they've got a pretty well rounded team and we're going to have to stay on our game if we want to compete," he said.
The captain was excited about watching his youthful side continue to develop throughout the summer.
"The good thing about us this year is we've got a fresh team so we're all keen and getting to training and keen to show the Premier League competition what we're all about."
Meanwhile, Pirates will take on Taree United at Wayne Richards Park while Wingham clash with Taree West.
Pirates captain Connor Cook said it was difficult to take too much out of their washed out fixture with Port City Leagues last Saturday.
"But I see a few positive signs in terms of our depth this season," he said.
Cook knows United will be eager to bounce back from an opening-round loss to Rovers.
"We're expecting a good, hard game that hopefully isn't rain-affected," he said.
