Lord Street, the venue for so many collisions, some tragic, was the scene of yet another collision on Sunday afternoon, when a car being driven by Mrs May Maltman of Grandview Parade, collided with a stationary car near the intersection of Flynn Street.
Mrs Maltman suffered a probable fracture to her right arm, possible abdominal injuries and shock. She was taken by ambulance to the Hastings District Hospital.
The Fire Brigade was called because of fears that electric power lines brought down in the accident could cause a fire.
Localised black-outs of up to five hours were caused in the Lord Street area by the accident.
Lions Club activities
Port Macquarie is fortunate in having several service clubs, all of which have contributed much over the years in time, energy and money, in helping the unfortunate and by making this town a better community.
The Lions Club, one of the town's youngest service clubs, has quite a formidable list of activities and projects which the Lions have successfully undertaken since the club's formation in 1959.
One of the lasting memorials to the Lions' public spirit is the delightful Lions Lookout and Park at Gaol Point.
Recently face-lifted with kerb and guttering, the park has become a well-known scenic spot.
There, too, can be seen a reproduced map of old Port Macquarie, the days when the roads were rough and unsealed, and the drinking water dirty.
A Lions project which has captured the imagination of students is the Lions youth of the year contest.
Each year, around Christmas, the Lions are hosts at a picnic for the senior citizens in the Burrawan units.
As well as the picnic, the senior citizens also receive a Lions Christmas cake. Several of the Lions activities received such a favourable response from the public they have now become regular events.
Port Macquarie Lions Club was given its first charter on September 19, 1959, at a glamorous function in the surf club pavilion. Kempsey was the sponsor club.
Become a movie star
The large crowd expected at Saturday's race meeting at Port Macquarie Racecourse will all be movie stars, appearing in a film on Port Macquarie being made by Eric Porter Studios.
The Race Club is going all out to make the scene a colourful one. The smartest dressed lady will receive a $15 open order from Merrilea Frock Salon and a $10 cash prize from the RSL Club, while the smartest dressed modern miss will be awarded a $15 open order from Reeds Big Corner Store and $10 from West Port Bowling Club.
As well, a number of complimentary tickets have been given to young ladies about the town who are expected to also adorn the course.
The club is making this effort for the film to correct the sub-standard amenities shown in the old film.
It showed a typical race day at the old track and the club wants to show off the improvements they have made in the meantime.
The five races for Saturday have been named for Lions International who are holding their convention in Port Macquarie this weekend.
