In a letter to residents, dated October 31 2019, the planning department said the NSW government recently announced a program to develop new housing in various places.
"As part of this program, we are currently investigating a two to three storey apartment building, comprising up to 15 dwellings, at 34 Hastings Street, Wauchope.
"We intend that these dwellings will:
- help meet a rising demand for affordable housing in this area
- ensure tenants have a safe and comfortable living environment
- be consistent with local planning controls, and
- deliver a good design outcome which makes a positive contribution to the neighbourhood."
The letter said the state government was committed to working closely with the local community as they undertake planning for the redevelopment of the site.
"In particular, we are seeking your views about key local issues that should be considered in the design of this new housing," continued the letter.
Residents are invited to send their comments to the community engagement team of the NSW Land and Housing Corporation by Monday November 18 2019. The email address is: communityengagement@facs.nsw.gov.au
After feedback is considered, the team will write to residents again telling them about the next steps.
One resident who didn't want to be named feared that there wouldn't be enough parking for the proposed development and that it would change the character of the area.
"Under the Port Macquarie-Hastings Local Environmental Plan 2011, residential accommodation is prohibited in Zone B4, although residential flat buildings may be permitted with consent," added the resident.
