Ground crews took advantage of a few days of stable conditions to do some back burning in places like Rollands Plains, along with Forestry, National Parks and Fire & Rescue firefighters.
Storms are forecast tonight (Friday) and into Saturday, with the risk of lightning strikes and new ignitions. There may some rain next week, which would ease conditions as bushfires continue to burn around the Mid Coast.
District officer Stuart Robb from the Rural Fire Service says they hope the winds won't be as strong as those experienced last week, and that temperatures won't be as high or humidity as low.
"We are still not out of the woods until we get some significant rain," said District Officer Robb.
"The local crews have done an exceptional job over the past eight weeks, supported well by crews from all the other states and New Zealand. It allowed us to get rest periods for our local volunteers.
"They will be back at it again when we continue into the weather cycle of benign conditions and then hotter, windier days with low humidity."
The message to everyone is:
- have a bushfire survival plan
- have the conversation with your family about what you will do in the event of a fire
- know how to prepare your home as best you can
- stay up-to-date with the current conditions, and
- stay as safe as possible
