The region is currently on level three water restrictions but council's general manager Craig Swift-McNair said staff may have to call an extraordinary meeting at the end of January, to discuss a move to level four restrictions.

Play elements involving water have been switched off at Livvi's Place Playground. However beach showers, taps at fish cleaning tables and drinking stations remain operational.

A council spokesperson said they are advising both residents and tourists to think about what they can do to conserve water, both inside the home and outdoors during the holiday period.

When the community moves to level four restrictions, the outdoor watering will be significantly impacted.

"We want residents to start thinking about their behaviour now to start preparing for those level four restrictions," a council spokesperson said.

Council staff are speaking to tourism operators one on one, in an effort to educate them about the water restrictions and what they should advise visitors to the region.

The spokesperson said residents need to educate their family members when they come to town about the water restrictions.

For example, residents should be mindful about the time they take to have a shower, in an effort to conserve water.

Similarly, the spokesperson said water bottles at restaurants should not just be tipped down the sink, rather the water should be used on plants or for another purpose.

The council spokesperson is urging people to only use drinking stations for their intended purpose.

"We don't want people to use the stations to wash their feet at the beach," he said.

"They can use a towel to get the sand off instead."

Council has erected signage at designated public spaces to remind people to be water wise.
