The Camden Haven Orchid Society will be holding its first orchid show for 2020 at the Laurieton United Services Club on January 11 and 12.
Although many members have experienced challenging growing conditions with the drought and bushfires, brilliant blooms of summer flowering orchids from vivid yellows to most delicate pinks, evergreen bromeliads and foliage plants with exotic spikes are a special treat for the weekend.
This is the time of the year for Stanhopea Species orchids to be in bloom.
Stanhopea orchids are grown in hanging baskets lined with paper bark or coconut fibre and flower out of the bottom of the basket and sort after by many enthusiasts.
The show will be open to the public on Saturday, January 11 from 10am to 4pm and on Sunday, January 12 from 9.30am to 3pm.
There will be exhibits by growers from Camden Haven, Kempsey, Port Macquarie, Taree, Wauchope and Forster areas and will be judged for awards by the Mid North Coast Judging Panel.
There will be potting demonstrations each day at 11am by Allan Wallace on Saturday and Lloyd Edwards on the Sunday.
A society sales table for orchids, bromeliads, foliage plants and accessories will be available together with growing notes and advice from members on genera to be grown in the area.
The presentation of awards will be at 3pm on the Sunday by a committee member of the Laurieton United Services Club.
Entry will be by gold coin and the society supports the Local Rural Fire Brigade.
